Junction Race Club
Overview
The Junction Racetrack, located over 1000km north of Perth and 10km west of Gascoyne Junction on Jimba Jimba Station, offers a unique country racing experience. With its dirt track and camping-friendly atmosphere, it provides a quintessential bush racing feel during its annual weekend of events.
Operated by the Junction Race Club, this track hosts the historic Junction Races, one of the oldest bush race meetings in Western Australia. The club, established in 1907, was originally known as “The Lyons and Minilya Amateur Racing Club.” The first race meeting took place on the Box Gully Flats near Gascoyne Junction, with locals walking for days to bring their horses to compete.
In 1930, the races moved to Dairy Creek Station, but a 20-year hiatus followed due to the Great Depression and drought. The club resumed activities in 1947 at its current location, and during World War II, it was renamed the Junction Race Club.
The Junction Races, held every September, feature a full weekend of activities, including racing, two-up, live music, and a Gymkhana. The highlight of the Saturday races is the Junction Cup, along with the popular Fashions On The Field competition.
Gascoyne Junction, a small town in the Gascoyne region, is known for its rugged landscapes and close-knit community. The annual race day significantly impacts the local community, bringing together residents and visitors, boosting local businesses, and fostering a sense of camaraderie and celebration. The event not only showcases the region’s rich racing heritage but also strengthens community bonds and supports the local economy.
