Overview

Kalgoorlie Racecourse, nestled in the heart of the Goldfields region about 600km east of Perth, is a historic racing venue established in 1896. Surrounded by the iconic red dirt of the outback, the lush green turf of the racecourse provides a striking contrast.

In the early days of racing in the Goldfields, numerous tracks were scattered throughout the region. However, many towns with circuits did not stand the test of time. It soon became clear that Boulder, Coolgardie, and Kalgoorlie, known as the ‘Big Three,’ would emerge as the leading tracks. The famous “Racing Round” derives its name from the carnivals held at each of these tracks, with the order of meetings alternating to ensure the best weather and attendance for each club.

Over the years, rivalry between the Kalgoorlie and Boulder clubs led to many differences of opinion. After much deliberation, the two clubs merged in March 1953 to form the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club (KBRC). Today, the KBRC hosts 25 race meetings annually and is one of the top provincial tracks in Western Australia.

The ‘Race Round’ includes the Hannans Handicap on Wednesday and the Kalgoorlie Cup on Saturday of the same week. This event is the highlight of Kalgoorlie’s social calendar, attracting visitors from Perth, regional WA, and interstate. Leading up to the Cup, events such as the famous Calcutta at the Tattersalls Club and the Sportman's Luncheon, often featuring a star guest speaker, add to the excitement.

The racecourse itself features a diamond-shaped track with a circumference of 1934m and a 320m home straight. The unique layout and festive atmosphere of the Race Round make Kalgoorlie Racecourse a must-visit destination for racing enthusiasts.

In addition to the racing action, Kalgoorlie Racecourse offers various entertainment options, including the popular “Fashions on the Field” competition and the World Two-Up Championships. The track is also home to the Signpost Museum, which showcases the rich history of racing in the region.
