Kununurra Race Club
Overview
Kununurra Racecourse, situated over 3,000km north of Perth, lies on the border between Western Australia and the Northern Territory. This unique location draws horses and jockeys from the Northern Territory, creating a distinctive mix of competitors at one of Australia’s most scenic racecourses.
The Kununurra Amateur Race Club was established on August 26th, 1967, during the vibrant Cotton Festival. This three-day celebration featured a festival ball, sports day, movie screenings, and a field day at the Kimberley Research Station. However, it was the inaugural races that truly captivated the community.
The first races included exciting events such as the Argyle Maiden Hack Race, Auvergne Ladies Race, Rosewood Maiden Handicap, Jumbo Stakes, Ladies Bracelet, and Carlton Handicap. These races quickly gained attention and support, thanks to the generosity of sponsors like TASCO Pty Ltd, B.W Cole, and the Commonwealth Banking Corporation.
Over the years, the Kununurra Races have flourished, becoming a key part of the local calendar. In 1969, feature articles like ‘Racing – Community Style’ and ‘Where Cotton Men Meet’ highlighted the event’s significance. By 1973, the Kununurra Amateur Race Club became an Incorporated Association, solidifying its status as a cherished tradition.
Kununurra Racecourse is the only turfed track in Western Australia north of Geraldton. The lush grassy track contrasts beautifully with the Kimberley rock formation, Carlton Ridge (also known as Sleeping Buddha), providing a stunning backdrop, especially in the late afternoon when the sun casts a warm glow on the rock.
Located alongside Lake Kununurra, the racecourse offers a unique experience where racegoers can arrive by boat, adding an extra layer of excitement for both locals and visitors. The Kununurra Race Club hosts two major race meetings each year, starting with Ladies Day and culminating with the Kununurra Cup a week later. During Cup week, the town comes alive, offering visitors a chance to explore the region’s natural gems and parks, making it a truly memorable event.
Today, the Kununurra Races remain a beloved fixture, bringing together residents and visitors in celebration of sport, community, and the rich cultural tapestry of the region.
