Leonora Racing Club
Overview
The Leonora Racing Club, one of Western Australia’s oldest, held its first race day in May 1900. Situated about 4kms from the historic town of Leonora in the North Goldfields region, the club hosts an annual race meeting in October.
Leonora, established in 1897 following the discovery of gold in 1895, has a rich history tied to the gold rush era. The town is renowned for its mining heritage, with several major gold mines and the Murrin Murrin laterite nickel project operating in the area. It also supports a significant pastoral industry.
Tower Street, the town’s main thoroughfare, retains much of its early 20th-century charm, with many original buildings still in use. Historical sites like the ghost town of Gwalia offer a glimpse into the past with preserved miners’ cottages and the Gwalia Historical Museum.
With a population of around 567 people as of the 2021 census, Leonora offers various amenities, including hotels, a motel, a caravan park, and recreational spots like Malcom Dam and Smoodgers Hill.
The annual Leonora Cup attracts plenty of visitors to the town and is an important event for the local community.
