Overview

The Mount Magnet Races are a celebrated event in the Mid-West region of Western Australia, held annually in September. Hosted by the Mount Magnet Race Club, which was founded in 1896, this event features a six-race program, including the Mount Magnet Cup. The race day is packed with activities such as Fashions on the Field, tug-o-war, foot races, kids' entertainment, live music, and even two-up. The event attracts locals and visitors from all over WA, offering a true outback racing experience.

Mount Magnet is located about 560km northeast of Perth. It is one of the region's original gold mining towns and the longest surviving gold mining settlement in the state. Established in the 1890s, Mount Magnet has a rich history tied to mining and pastoral industries. The town's name comes from the prominent hill, Warramboo, which has a high iron content that affects compass readings.

The town offers numerous historical buildings, heritage sites, and walk trails, providing visitors with a fantastic insight into its past. Notable sites include the Wirnda Barna Arts Centre and the Mount Magnet Mining and Pastoral Museum. During the wildflower season from August to November, the area attracts tourists with its abundant natural display of wildflowers.

Mount Magnet's community is known for its resilience and outback spirit, making events like the Mount Magnet Races a highlight of the local social calendar. The racecourse, located north of town, provides a picturesque setting surrounded by red dirt and open landscapes, enhancing the unique charm of this rural event. The races are an important event for the local community as one of the few remaining in the town.
