Overview

Established in 1902, the Port Hedland Turf Club has a rich and vibrant history as one of four thoroughbred racing clubs in the Pilbara. Integral to Port Hedland’s unique character, the club features one of Australia’s few dual surface racecourses, with 1100m of pindan dirt leading onto 700m of grassed track, including the home straight.

In September 2023, the Town of Port Hedland unveiled a new multi-function building, Milpaku Kuma, which means “coming together.” This state-of-the-art multipurpose sports and community facility offers racegoers a premium race day experience. The expansive balconies overlook the Town Oval and racetrack, as well as the facility’s outdoor grassed space. The building also showcases artwork from several talented local artists. Punters and racing participants are treated to the newest racecourse facility in the state.

Racing season kicks off each year in May, with the Port Hedland Turf Club hosting six meetings. The two biggest events, Ladies Day and Port Hedland Cup Day, unite local communities and attract visitors from around Australia, who enjoy the warm Pilbara hospitality.

Located near the world’s largest bulk export tonnage port and set against a backdrop of some of the longest trains on the planet, the Port Hedland Turf Club has a larger-than-life persona. With onsite TAB, bar and catering facilities, a shady members section, and a grassed general admissions area, the club aims to provide the most welcoming and entertaining racing season for its patrons and tourists.

Port Hedland is home to several trainers who prepare their horses at nearby stabling areas, including South Hedland. The racing community is strong, and the popularity of the events grows each year.
