A National Star
Miata attracted the media, spectators and greyhound fans around the nation. She was so newsworthy that she became the headline act and promotional star at race meetings wherever she competed, leaving other elite sprinters in the shadow of her stardom.
Miata didn’t waste time attracting attention. On her third, fourth and fifth starts she set track records. From there she continued with explosive speed, winning races on eight different tracks and setting or equalling nine track records around the country. In a career that spanned from 2011 through to mid-2013 Miata secured her name in the history and record books. She won the title of Schweppes WA Greyhound of the Year in 2012 and was a finalist in 2013. She then became National Greyhound of the Year, twice, an honour that has never before been achieved.
The excitement Miata caused was unparallelled. When she won the Galaxy in 2012, there was a capacity crowd at Cannington Greyhounds. ‘When the dogs jumped,’ reported The West Australian Journalist Robert Edwards, ‘the crowd was chanting “Miata, Miata”. I have never seen anything like that.’
By 2013 Miata was Australasia’s highest-earning greyhound with $715,508 earned in stake money. In her short career, she won 42 races from 51 starts, including seven Black Type races, and five Group 1’s.
