Inductee 2014: Paul Harvey

1 June 2014

Leading Rider for more than a Decade

Never satisfied with second best, Paul Harvey was determined to become a champion rider. He began on country race tracks and steadily worked his way to the top. Not only did Harvey become the State’s leading jockey, but he has remained at the top of his profession with a record that stands above his predecessors and peers. In a period of 14 years he won a record 12 metropolitan jockey premierships.

Harvey’s success began slowly, then in 1995 he won the WATC Derby on Crying Game and his winning streak continued. He has now won nearly every feature race on the Western Australian racing calendar. This includes the Railway Stakes, Kingston Town Classic and WATC Derby, which he has won multiple times. His most memorable race was riding Old Comrade to victory in the 2002 Australian Cup at Flemington, where he narrowly, but surely, defeated the great champion Northerly in the final few strides. Not surprisingly he recalls being over the moon. In other memorable races, Harvey won the Victoria Derby on Plastered and the Goodwood Handicap on Spectrum.

Harvey’s consistency is no more evident than in his record of 117 wins in 1999/2000. He has now ridden in excess of 2,400 winners throughout Australia and taken more than 12,700 rides.
