Winners Announced for 2021 Ladies of Chasing Awards

15 April 2021

Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) announced the winners of the Ladies of Chasing Awards this afternoon at an event celebrating the success and dedication of women in WA’s greyhound racing industry.

Over 100 attendees gathered to highlight women’s achievements in the following categories; Leadership, Dedication to Greyhound Racing, Greyhound Welfare and Administration.

The event saw one of WA’s prominent greyhound racing figures, Kira Withers, win the Leadership Award.

Kira, and her family, dedicate time on and off the track to promote greyhound racing through their champion greyhound Tommy Shelby who is fondly known as the ‘People’s Dog’. Kira sets a high standard of passion and commitment to the industry, as well as giving back to the wider community from success on the track. Kira along with the owners of Tommy, Jodie Harders and Kira’s partner Steve Withers, donate 10% of Tommy Shelby’s prizemoney to a different charity each month, with more than $40K raised for important organisations such as Telethon, WA Bushfire Volunteers, Movember, Dolly’s Dream Australia, Beyond Blue, and is currently racing for the Starlight Foundation.

Karen Lennox-Bradley, a well-known figure in WA greyhound racing and a kennel attendant, was presented with the Dedication to Greyhound Racing Award for being a pivotal asset to the industry.

Karen is a strong advocate for the industry, especially through social media, supporting industry participants in WA as well as over east. Karen was acknowledged for her willingness to go above and beyond, always leaving a positive impact on the industry. Karen’s real value is her willingness to always help everyone, her positive attitude and attending every greyhound meeting, usually arriving even before the Stewards.

The Greyhound Welfare Award went to Christina Morrison for her staunch commitment to assisting with the rehoming process for retired greyhounds and continuing to improve her skillset in fostering, which is a volunteer position.

Since 2016, Christina has fostered approximately 10 greyhounds for Greyhounds as Pets WA and adopted one herself. Christina has been a model foster carer, taking on many dogs with differing needs.

The Administration Award went to Alina Cattana from Greyhounds WA Mandurah, for her dedication and passion to the industry through her role as the Manager of the racetrack.

Alina was described as approachable and genuine, and always willing to improve and create new ideas to make an enjoyable experience for people at Mandurah. Alina has positive relationships and engages well with all industry participants, whilst promoting greyhound racing and greyhound welfare.

RWWA CEO Ian Edwards said RWWA is honoured to acknowledge the vital and diverse roles women play in the greyhound racing industry as pioneers and examples for other women in the sport.

“It is always a fantastic opportunity when the industry comes together to recognise those who are making an outstanding impact, as well as the women who have carved their way and been admirable leaders in greyhound racing,” Ian said.

“All of the award nominees should be very proud of their achievements, and RWWA thanks them for their contribution to the industry.”

The Ladies of Chasing Awards were held at Millbrook Estate in Jarrahdale.
