Port Hedland Turf Club has advised Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) that its 2022 racing season will not take place, due to planned building upgrades by the Town of Port Hedland.
To facilitate sufficient racing opportunities for the Pilbara racing community, RWWA has worked with the Nor West Jockey Club (Roebourne) and Carnarvon Race Club to increase race meetings at their venues.
Please see below for the amended Pilbara racing season schedule, with the program being made available on RWWA’s Thoroughbred Race Dates & Programming page in the coming days.
Pilbara racing season:
- Roebourne - Friday, 10 June
- Roebourne - Saturday, 25 June (Ladies Day)
- Marble Bar - Saturday, 2 July
- Roebourne - Friday, 8 July
- Roebourne - Saturday, 23 July (Roebourne Cup)
- Port Hedland @ Roebourne - Sunday, 31 July (Port Hedland Cup)
- Port Hedland @ Roebourne - Friday, 12 August
- Newman – Sunday, 21 August
- In addition, an additional race meeting will be scheduled at Carnarvon on Friday, 13 May and RWWA is working with the Carnarvon Race Club on the possibility of adding a further race meeting on Friday, 27 May.
The number of races at the Roebourne and Carnarvon race meetings will be increased from six to seven, to further compensate for the temporary cessation of racing at Port Hedland Turf Club.
RWWA consulted with the Nor-West Jockey Club to attempt an earlier start to their season to avert moving race meetings to Carnarvon, but unfortunately the club was not in a position to commence their season at an earlier date.
Stabling and training facilities will continue to be available at Port Hedland during the upcoming season.
RWWA would like to thank Nor West Jockey Club and Carnarvon Race Club for their cooperation and looks forward to resuming racing at Port Hedland Turf Club next year, once the building upgrades are complete.
