Farewell to racing leader Ron Sayers

10 May 2022

The West Australian racing community is saddened by the loss of well-known thoroughbred owner and breeder Ron Sayers.

Yarradale Stud owner Ron, who died this week at the age of 70, was a leader in both the racing and mining sectors of WA.

He matched business success through his company Ausdrill with racing success and gave his time generously to the State’s racing community.

He and wife Lyn recently welcomed Racing and Wagering Western Australia’s Own the Dream competitors to his property for an inside look at the racing world.

Ron owned as many as 200 broodmares and had shares in 10 stallions. He was also part owner of champion WA galloper, Northerly.

Many in racing would agree with Ron’s mining compatriot Mark Connelly, who described him to The West Australian as “an absolute quality guy”.

“He not only started businesses, he helped other people start businesses,” he said.

Ron is survived by his wife Lyn, three daughters and two sons.
