New leader for WA racing

Western Australian racing expert David Hunter has been appointed Acting Chief Racing Officer of Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA).

Over the last 18 years, David has been an integral part of the organisation’s leadership team across several business areas. From Manager Thoroughbred Racing, David moved into tri-code management as Commercial Racing and Planning Manager in 2017 and Head of Racing Operations in 2021.

RWWA Chief Executive Officer Ian Edwards said David’s extensive experience and knowledge of WA racing would ensure the continued steady leadership of the state’s thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing codes.

“David has been vital in driving and overseeing a range of initiatives for the improvement of WA racing, including stakes strategy and race programming enhancements, and the introduction of a new racing bets levy framework that has seen revenue from this source more than double to over $130million this year,” Ian said.

“David also took on a central role in negotiating media rights agreements for WA race clubs to increase revenue streams, as well as overseeing major infrastructure projects for the industry – including WA’s largest thoroughbred track development in Bunbury.

“I appreciate David’s commitment to the racing industry and providing stability and leadership during the ongoing process of the TAB sale.”

The temporary appointment comes after outgoing Chief Racing Officer Charlotte Mills announced her move to her home state of Victoria and the Moonee Valley Racing Club team last month.

Mr Edwards said Charlotte’s strong leadership and outstanding contribution to the racing community during her 13 years at the organisation had set the bar high.

David will take on the role for six months starting 1 July 2022.
