Furphy Railway Stakes Barrier Draw

15 November 2022

Reigning WA Derby winner Alaskan God has drawn fairly for Saturday’s Group 1 Furphy-Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot.

The Dan Morton-trained galloper drew barrier 14 earlier this afternoon, as he looks to join Regal Power and Western Empire as recent WA Derby winners to return as a four-year-old and win the Railway Stakes.

Alaskan God will likely start from barrier 12 with two emergencies drawn inside him and has firmed into $3.80 favouritism with TABtouch.

Fellow fancied runners Trix Of The Trade ($6) and Karli’s Karma ($7) were two key winners from the draw in barrier eight and nine respectively.

East coast visitors Ironclad and Yonkers also drew well in barrier seven and eleven respectively.

Treasured Star’s hopes of delivering owners Bob and Sandra Peters a fifth successive Railway Stakes win copped a cruel blow, with the mare drawing barrier 20.

Morton said he was happy to draw closer to the outside with Alaskan God.

“He’s a big rangy horse and needs to be in the moving line,” Morton told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

“He should get that from where he has drawn.

“Hopefully he can get three-deep with cover.”

Morton also said stablemate Startrade was “above the odds” and will start from barrier four.

Trainer Colin Webster said he was pleased with Trix Of The Trade’s draw and would get every opportunity to score his fourth blacktype victory.

“I’m very happy with the barrier,” he said.

“He will probably come into barrier six, which is ideal for him.”
