Wagin Set To End Season With 100-Year Celebration

Wagin celebrates their 100-year history this Sunday, with a twilight meeting to commemorate the big event, with the TabTouch Better You Bet 3YO Wetsbred Final the feature of the day, carrying a $5000 cash trophy to the winner.

Prelude winner Showpony lines up from barrier four in the final for trainer and driver Nathan Turvey, with the lightly raced three-year-old looking to make it three in a row.

"The little fella has trained on good, so hopefully he goes well." Turvey said.

Club President, Kevin Spurr assures that it’s one not to be missed with their very own fashions on the field on offer, with a $200 prize for best dressed lady and the gent on track, as well as a $500 cash prize on offer for the best dressed couple on course.

It’s not just about the adults though, there will be free ice creams and fairy floss for the kids, as well as face painting and a magician on course to keep the kids entertained.

Gates will open at 12pm with the tote facilities, bar, and meals also up and running, just in time for the first race which is due to kick off at 1.15pm.

“We have the final of the TabTouch 3YO series with a $5000 trophy, and we will also have the club awards to present,”

“We have memorabilia, champion Wagin horse Royal Force will have his Fremantle Cup Trophy and Rug on display and maybe even his Miracle Mile Trophy as well.”

“People would be crazy if they don’t come,” said Club President, Kevin Spurr.

As well as club presentations, Wagin has another special presentation for the day, with Don Davies celebrating his 50th year of service to the club.

Hayden Reeves is set to take out leading club trainer for the third year in a row, with the Coolup based trainer currently sitting on 49 points, a clear 36 points ahead of his nearest rival.

There’s 12 points between first and second on the leader board for Leading Club Driver, with Trent Wheeler driving who’s driving in career best form looking to take it out again at Wagin. The ‘Collie King’ sits on 37 points, with Maddy Young on 25 points going into Sunday’s meeting. Trent won’t be driving at the meeting, and Young currently has three drives on her book.

Only a point separates them in the Leading Club Junior Driver category, with Emily Johnson currently in the lead with 12 points. Kyle Symington sits just behind her on 11 points, as well as Emily Suvaljko and Corey Peterson.

There’s quite a few in contention for leading club pacer, with Star For Me in equal first position with Follow The Music on 8 points. Follow The Music has drawn barrier 7 in the second race for Matt Scott and Shannon Suvaljko. Highly Flammable sits just behind them on 6 points, and with a win last week, he will be looking to make it two in a row, with the seven-year-old drawing barrier one in race 4 in a 7-horse field.
