The Western Trilogy prize money jumps to almost $7million
3 August 2023
The richest racing weekend in Western Australia is getting even richer as prize money rises to nearly $7million for the world’s first and only tri-code slot race series, The TABtouch Western Trilogy.
Racing and Wagering Western Australia Chief Executive Officer Ian Edwards said the prize pool included an extra $1million to elevate The Quokka in the ranks of the top thoroughbred races across Australia.
“The strength and vitality of WA racing shows in this prize money boost for our unique autumn carnival which combines thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing,” Ian said.
“The huge success of all three races and the interest they generated deserves the 25 per cent we’re adding to the prize pool for each one.
“We also want to reward slot holders who embraced the new concept and support the races for the long-term future.”
Already the biggest prize ever offered in West Australian racing, the $4million Quokka will again break the record next year by jumping to $5million.
The $1million Nullarbor will rise to $1.25million in 2024, making it the second richest harness race in Australia.
The $500,000 Sandgroper for greyhounds goes up to $600,000.
“The TABtouch Western Trilogy is a bold and innovative concept we successfully launched this year and we intend to build its importance into the future,” Ian said.
“Taking the Quokka up to $5million places it right in the top echelon of thoroughbred races across the country and confirms our resolve to keep public attention on WA during the autumn racing carnival.
“We have extended the race series across three days next year, with The Sandgroper to run on Thursday, April 18, followed by The Nullarbor on Friday evening at Gloucester Park and ending with a huge day at Ascot on Saturday for The Quokka.
“We look forward to putting Perth in the spotlight and attracting the interest of all Australian racing fans.”
Research commissioned by Racing and Wagering Western Australia revealed The Western Trilogy generated almost $6 million in economic value for the state this year.
Almost 8000 people attended the trailblazing race series, including visitors from across WA and interstate, with the large majority saying they were likely to return next year. More than 90 per cent said the event met or exceeded their expectations.
The Western Trilogy will be held across 18-20 April, 2024.
