Turvey Getting A Handle On Three Rumours

20 June 2024

A strong last start win by Three Rumours has reassured trainer Nathan Turvey he has a key player in tomorrow night’s Kerry Clark (2130m) at Gloucester Park.

Three Rumours proved far too strong for her fellow mares over 2130m at Gloucester Park earlier this month, just her second win from 12 starts under Turvey’s care.

The mare sat outside Blaze Coops, before winning by 11.8m in 1:56.1.

Turvey said he thought that effort was somewhere near the best of Three Rumours.

“When I got her off Barry, her first few starts for me were really good,” Turvey told The Trots WA.

“I seemed to lose her after that, but I think that’s as good as good as she goes.

“The pleasing part was when she hit the front her ears were flopping, so if she got challenged, she would’ve had more in store.”

Prior to the last start win, Three Rumours failed to run a placing in her six previous starts.

Turvey said he had made some small changes to how he trained the mare.

“I’m probably learning how to manage her a bit better and keep her on the fresh side,” he said.

“I probably don’t do as much between runs and just backed off her a bit.

“She’s a natural athlete, so she doesn’t need a lot of work between runs.”

Three Rumours will be looking to score her biggest win in tomorrow’s $50,000 event, where she will start from barrier 11.

Kim Prentice’s Soho Seraphine is expected to be the testing material for Three Rumours, after she drew barrier one earlier in the week.

The Gary Hall Snr-trained Acharne Girl is another of the key chances in the event, having come up with barrier 10.

Turvey said he was happy with the draw on the second line and said reinsman Gary Hall Jnr had plenty of options from there.

“I like the draw for her,” he said.

“We like to put her in the race when we can, but she has come from back in the field too.

“I think she can go on with it the way she went last start.

“If her last two runs weren’t as good then we probably would’ve gone for a break.”

Turvey also has last week’s Free-For-All winner Eve Crocker engaged in the feature event, but her chances of winning took a hit when she drew barrier eight.

Turvey, who will also drive Eve Crocker, said he wouldn’t be surprised if the mare ran a bold race tomorrow night.

“She’s probably a horse that goes better the quicker they go,” he said.

“The jump in grade doesn’t worry me, but the wide draw does.”

The Kerry Clarke gets underway tomorrow night at 6.18.
