Port Hedland Cup provides peak of the Pilbara social calendar
5 August 2024
The Port Hedland Turf Club (PHTC), run entirely by dedicated volunteers, is set to host more than 2000 racegoers on 11 August for the $60,000 TAMS Port Hedland Cup (2200m).
The annual feature race meeting underscores racing’s profound community importance in regional WA, with PHTC’s volunteers working tirelessly to ensure the Port Hedland racing season is a success.
Racing in the Pilbara, which is home to four thoroughbred race clubs, generates more than $17.8 million to the State’s economy annually while sustaining 140 full-time jobs.
In addition to its important economic contribution, Racing and Wagering Western Australia CEO Ian Edwards said racing was embedded in the social fabric of many Pilbara communities.
“Racing has significant social benefits across Western Australia, especially in regional towns such as Port Hedland, because it provides the community a chance to connect and enjoy a day out,” he said.
“Without the tireless efforts and unwavering dedication of the PHTC volunteers, the Port Hedland racing season simply wouldn't be possible.
“Their commitment and passion ensure that events like the Port Hedland Cup are a success year after year, bringing the community together and highlighting the community spirit of the Pilbara.”
The PHTC has enjoyed strong crowd numbers at its race meetings this season.
PHTC President Troy Morrissey said the positive attendance reiterated the importance of racing in the Pilbara.
“It’s been a really good year with attendance, showing how important racing is to the community here,” Troy said.
“For Port Hedland, it’s the biggest social event of the year and provides everyone with a chance to catch up – which is very important in a town heavily based on shift work.
“Our club is entirely volunteer based, so we really thank the community for getting involved and attending the races to have a great day out.”
