Trainer Stefan Vahala says Aztec Ruler has improved since an almost perfect Melbourne debut as the five-year-old prepares to face another interstate battle in Saturday’s Listed John Dillon Stakes (1400m) at Sandown.
Aztec Ruler, a dual black-type winner in Perth, created a big impression at Flemington two weeks ago when competing in the Group 3 Standish (1200m) he finished strongly for a close second behind It’sourtime.
Vahala says Aztec Ruler hasn’t taken a backward step since arriving in Melbourne and believes several key factors point to the son of Universal Ruler running another big race and going one better than his interstate debut.
Aztec Ruler is two wins from four second-up and tackles his favourite 1400m distance where he’s enjoyed his best results when successful in last years Listed Bunbury Stakes and Carbine Club Of WA Stakes.
Combine that with a strong track gallop at Flemington on Tuesday and a glowing assessment from jockey Jye McNeil, Vahala says his confidence levels are growing.
“He’s a gun, the horse just turns up every time,” Vahala said to Racing WA.
“Wherever you take him he turns up.
“He’s eating the house down and is bouncing.
“He’s a really happy horse.
“Jye said his work was awesome and he pulled up super.
“He’s improved on the first up run.”
Aztec Ruler was purchased for $40,000 from Quanah Park Thoroughbreds at the 2021 Perth Magic Millions Perth Sale.
After seven wins and six placings from 22 starts, he has prizemoney nearing $700,000.
Aztec Ruler faces seven rivals in the Dillon Stakes and jumps from barrier five.
McNeil retains the mount.
