Nominees for 2024 WA Harness Horse of the Year announced

The race for 2024 WA Harness Horse of the Year will be a tight one with a stacked field of nominees featuring WA Pacing Cup champion Minstrel, Bunbury Cup-winner Jumpingjackmac and talented gelding Mister Smartee.

While the Mare of the Year will be contested by the nominees Aardiebytheseaside, Steno and Wonderful to Fly.

The Three-Year-Old Colt or Gelding of the Year nominees features a pair from Greg Bond’s camp with Christopher Dance and Golden Lode alongside the Ron Huston-prepared Bet The House. The Three-Year-Old Filly of the Year will be decided between Water Lou, Madam Publisher and Atlantic Gem.

In the Two-Year-Old class it’s Captainshavtime, Copper Head Lady and Reinette in the running for the Filly of the Year, while Colt or Gelding of the Year in the age is between Belly Up, Cyclone Jordy and Sebastian James.

The Trotter of the Year will be a tight finish with Hold That Gold, Nickys Son and Our Maestoso all in the running.

Reigning winner for Young Achiever of the Year Emily Suvaljko is looking to recapture the award, which will also be contested by Toby Lynn and Kyle Symington. While the night will also celebrate some of the leading participants in WA harness racing, with the Driver and Trainer of the Year gongs set to be awarded. 

Racing WA Chief Racing Officer David Hunter said each nominee was a worthy candidate to take home the top honours.

“All the nominees have had a stellar 2024 season and are deserving of recognition for it,” he said.

“The awards night is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the stars of our harness industry, which contributes $241.1 million to the State’s economy each year.”

The 2024 WA Harness Awards are set to take place on Saturday, 22 March at Crown Perth.
