Racing WA joins the International Forum for the Aftercare of Racehorses

18 March 2025

Racing WA has strengthened its commitment to support the best standards of care for racing animals at all stages of their lives by becoming a member of the International Forum for the Aftercare of Racehorses (IFAR).

IFAR is a globally recognised organisation dedicated to promoting the welfare of thoroughbreds throughout their lifetime.

Supporting horses in their transition to life beyond racing is an important component of Racing WA’s Equine Welfare Strategy and is the basis of the Off the Track WA (OTTWA) program.

Since the program’s inception in 2014, OTTWA has expanded to become a suite of initiatives which prioritise the aftercare of thoroughbred and standardbred horses – helping former racehorses embark on a second career as pleasure, companion or performance animals.

OTTWA aligns strongly with IFAR objectives, including raising awareness on the importance of welfare, improving education on lifetime care and promoting the versatility, adaptability and potential of thoroughbreds in equestrian.

“Joining IFAR is an important step in furthering Racing WA’s efforts to ensure racehorses receive the best possible care beyond their racing careers,” Racing WA Welfare Operations Manager Kay Fuller said.

“This membership allows us to stay at the forefront of global aftercare initiatives, exchange knowledge with industry leaders across the world and highlight the progress we’ve made here in Western Australia.”
