National Greyhound Adoption Month a walk in the park

2 May 2025

Caroline Sutton has found her perfect pet this month after adopting a new four-legged friend by the name of Mo, through the Greyhounds As Pets WA (GAP) program during National Greyhound Adoption Month in April.

Caroline’s cute find was part of a resoundingly successful month for the GAP program, with 31 retired greyhounds finding their forever home, eclipsing last year’s April total of 23 adoptions.

Mo has now transitioned perfectly into her new life alongside Caroline’s cats and has already proven a timely new addition to the family, Caroline told GAP.

“Mo has settled beautifully and is an absolute delight,” she said.

“She’s great to walk, loves everyone she meets and gets so excited when I return home.

“Adopting a greyhound was something I've wanted to do for a long time, and Mo was the perfect girl for me.”

The seamless transition to homelife for Mo was guided by the program’s foster option, giving her an initial insight into life beyond GAP.

The April initiative saw the GAP program lower adoption fees and host various events such as “pat and chat” and a Greyhound Adoption Day, as well as the continued support from GAP ambassador – NBL champion and Perth Wildcats legend, Damian Martin.

Damian has fostered greyhounds in the past, which he said are the perfect breed for life at home with his wife and three daughters.

“Like any athlete, they retire and become super lazy, so I really connect well with them,” he laughed.

The GAP team has worked tirelessly during April, matching the right greyhounds to the right homes, considering each individual’s lifestyle to ensure the perfect fit.

GAP Manager Lexie Ekert was thrilled with the team’s efforts in making the month such a success, along with the support from the community.

“National Greyhound Adoption Month has been an enormous success this year, with an increase in community engagement and adoption numbers from last year,” Lexie said.

"We are so fortunate to work with this amazing breed every day and we love nothing more than helping match greyhounds to their new families.”
