Gascoyne’s future equestrian leaders saddle up at Bidgemia Riding Camp

More than 30 young riders from across the Gascoyne have come together for a week of learning, connection and horsemanship at the annual Bidgemia Riding Camp.

Backed by the Racing WA Community Fund, the camp – held at Bidgemia Station, about 160km east of Carnarvon, in April – was focused on supporting the region’s next generation of young riders.

It provided riders, aged from five years old to 17 years old, the opportunity to work with experienced instructors, build confidence in the saddle and deepen their understanding of horse welfare and safety.

Utilising the Racing WA Community Fund grant, four qualified coaches attended this year’s camp to deliver hands-on horsemanship training for all levels – from led-line beginners to advanced riders.

Bidgemia Riding Club President Jodie McTaggart said the camp was a highlight for many Gascoyne families.

“This is more than just riding, it’s about building knowledge, confidence, friendships and responsible practices that kids take home to their families and horses,” she said.

“The support we received this year via the Racing WA Community Fund helped us bring in fantastic coaches who made a lasting impact on our young riders.”

Parents and caregivers were also encouraged to participate in the sessions, which covered practical riding skills, horse care and best-practice animal welfare.

Racing and Wagering Western Australia Chief Executive Officer Ian Edwards said the program reflected a strong commitment to promoting equine welfare and responsible horsemanship.

“Bidgemia Riding Camp is helping to shape the next generation of responsible riders and horse owners in the Gascoyne,” Mr Edwards said.

“Supporting programs like this aligns closely with Racing WA’s values, as we work to foster a culture of care, respect and responsibility both within and beyond the racing industry.”
