Derby Winner’s Career Likely Over

20 June 2025

WA Derby winner A Lot Of Good Men appears almost certain to have run his last race, after being ruled out of tomorrow’s Swan Draught-Strickland Stakes (2000m) at Pinjarra with a tendon issue.

The four-year-old was set to get out to 2000m for the first time since winning last year’s Derby prior to the setback.

Trainer Trevor Andrews said scans picked up on the issue yesterday.

“We just picked up on it yesterday,” Andrews told TABradio.

“Jarrad (Noske) rode him at the track and he just went 1200 evens.

“I wasn’t happy with it when I got back to the stables, so I got the vet around trotted him up.

“We couldn’t pick up any soreness, so we played on and scanned it and he’s got a little hole in it unfortunately.

“His racing future is in doubt.”

Andrews said he would wait to see how A Lot Of Good Men responded to treatment before officially retiring him, but conceded he faced an uphill battle.

As well as winning the Derby, A Lot Of Good Men was placed in the Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) and four Listed races as a three-year-old.

Andrews said he hoped A Lot Of Good Men could find a home at stud.

“What his future is, I’m not sure,” he said.

“He’s got a nice pedigree, but he’s a staying type of horse and they’re not the sort of horses that do well at stud.

“We’ll just let the dust settle and work out his next adventure.”

A Lot Of Good Men’s likely retirement follows the news of multiple Group winner Marocchino’s career coming to a close earlier this week.
