From England to the Kimberley: Whittington shines in Broome Cup

18 August 2025

It’s a long way from the rolling hills of England to the red dirt of Broome, but for Elisha Whittington, Saturday’s Broome Cup win was a moment that made every kilometre worth it.

The 28-year-old jockey, who hails from the UK, etched her name into the Kimberley racing history books with a brilliant victory aboard King Mahuta in the $100,000 feature.

It was her biggest win since relocating to Western Australia — and one that capped a journey filled with persistence, passion, and plenty of travel.

“I’ve been enjoying Broome, they have been good to me this season,” Whittington said on Tabradio.

“It was a great weekend and a memorable one at that.

“It was a great feeling, and I appreciate the support from everyone.”

Whittington partnered with trainer Brett Pope for the first time on King Mahuta, a galloper who had shown promise with back-to-back wins at Carnarvon and a strong second in the Port Hedland Cup.

Despite drawing wide in barrier 11, Whittington gave the gelding a patient and accomplished ride, timing her run to perfection to claim the Cup in front of a big Broome crowd.

Whittington was thrilled to have linked up with King Mahuta and was confident the five-year-old gelding had the stamina to run out the staying trip.

“I always knew he had a great chance, the trip to me was not going to be an issue,” Whittington said.

“My plan was, and Mr Pope’s plan was try and be positive with him and get him comfortable up close.

“He did that comfortably and it was a great outcome.

“The horse was game and tough.”

Whittington’s journey began on the UK circuit, where she rode her first winner in 2018 at Wolverhampton.

Since moving to Australia, she’s embraced the challenge of adapting to new tracks, new horses, and a new racing culture.

Her work ethic and resilience have earned her rides across the state, from city, provincial and country meetings.

With the Broome Cup under her belt, Whittington’s fondness for Australia has only grown since arriving.

Her commitment to building a racing career in Western Australia is paying off.

“I’m loving it so far and have not regretted any decision,” Whittington said.

“Every moment is just great and I’m taking everything on board.

“I’m learning lots and will continue to put my head down.

“I’m looking forward to the next meetings and a few more tracks I’ve not been to.

“There is no plan at the moment, just enjoy and take each day as it comes.”
