Lazi Dais is racing in fine form for Baskerville trainer-reinsman Ryan Bell, who drove the gelding to an impressive all-the-way victory in the $100,000 Bookings@Allwoodstud.com.au Westbred Classic final for three-year-old colts and geldings at Gloucester Park on Friday night.
Even though he beat some WA Derby hopefuls, Bell said that he was anxious to give Lazi Dais plenty of time to mature.
“He is still not a hundred per cent; he was boring up the track really bad all the way tonight,” said Bell. “He has bad stifles, so we are planning to put him away for six months and bring him back next year. He is still a work in progress.
“Early on, I wanted to sack him because I couldn’t get him to pace, and now he is not tractable enough to be a true Derby contender. We have looked after him for this long, so why not look after him some more.”
Lazi Dais was a well-supported $1.60 favourite, who set the pace from the No. 1 barrier and won by three lengths from $41 chance Pinjarra Rocks, who trailed him all the way and finished a nose ahead of $9 chance Last Hard Copy, who finished a head in front of $5 chance Captain Stirling, who fought on grandly after working hard in the breeze.
Lazi Dais, who is raced by Bell’s wife Tiffany Sharpe and Paula Davis, of Manjimup, is by American sire Rock N Roll Heaven and is the first foal out of Moon Goddess, who earned $36,025 from two wins and three placings from 13 starts, with the highlight of her career her second placing behind Double Expresso in the Sales Classic for two-year-old fillies in March 2019.
