‘Don’t chase the unicorn bet’ – Promoting safer gambling during Gambling Harm Awareness Week

21 October 2025

A new State Government–funded campaign, ‘Beware of chasing the unicorn’, is raising awareness of gambling harm and promoting the free, confidential support services available to individuals, families and communities across the State.

Launched as part of Gambling Harm Awareness Week (GHAW), the campaign encourages people to reflect on their gambling habits and make safer, more informed choices.

Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) – operator of the WA TAB – is proud to support the initiative, led by the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety (LGIRS), in partnership with Crown Perth, Lotterywest, Centrecare and Medibank.

RWWA Responsible Wagering Officer Carl Marche said the campaign’s message was a timely reminder that while gambling can be enjoyed responsibly, it’s important to recognise when it might be crossing the line.

“Chasing that ‘unicorn bet’ – the one big win that feels just out of reach – can lead people down a harmful path,” Carl said.

“We want to encourage everyone to have a flutter for fun, but to do so mindfully and within their means. It’s about keeping it balanced, safe and enjoyable.

“Gambling harm awareness isn’t something we focus on for just one week – it’s built into what we do every day.

“We’re committed to ensuring wagering remains a positive, sustainable part of WA’s racing and sporting culture.”
