Greyhound stewards’ inquiry – trainer Graham Ellis

21 September 2023

Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) stewards have concluded an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the euthanasia of Deadly Data on 16 July 2023.

Evidence was heard from T2 Trainer Mr G Ellis, RWWA Head of Veterinary Services Dr J Medd and RWWA Deputy Chief Steward Mr S Jones. A report was tabled into evidence from Veterinarian Dr C Nairn.

Trainer Mr Graham Ellis pleaded guilty to a charge under R21(1)(d).

The specifics of the charge were that prior to 16 July 2023, Mr Graham Ellis, being a licenced person with RWWA, failed to provide veterinary attention to Deadly Data’s injured tail, when necessary and while under his care, contrary to rule 21(1)(d).

Stewards have now completed their deliberations and have determined to impose a disqualification of nine months, commencing 21 September 2023.

In consideration of penalty, stewards were mindful of the following factors:

  • Mr Ellis’s guilty plea and remorse over the incident.
  • Mr Ellis’s cooperation during the investigation and inquiry.
  • Mr Ellis’s personal circumstances and unblemished record in the industry.
  • That Mr Ellis had applied first-aid in the treatment of the injured tail, however the injury did not respond to his treatments.
  • The expectation that licensed persons apply the highest of standards with respect to all matters associated with animal welfare.
